Komets ambush Generals 6-2, tie IHL all-time home win streak record

FORT WAYNE KOMETS GAME RECAP                      

Fort Wayne, IN  3/22/08 --- The Fort Wayne Komets upended the visiting Flint Generals 6-2 Saturday night to tie the all-time IHL record of consecutive home wins at 22 games in front of a crowd of 7,530 at the Memorial Coliseum.  The original record was set during the 1965-66 season by the Muskegon Mohawks.

The Komets have not posted a regulation loss in 16 straight games.

After a scoreless first period, Flint right winger John DiPace broke the ice with the first goal of the match at 2:46 of the second period.  The Komets came back with a pair of goals by right winger Luciano Aquino and defenseman Kevin Bertram before defenseman Nick Tuzollino pulled the Generals even 2-1 at 13:50.  Komet blueliner Jake Pence netted a wrister with 27 seconds remaining in the second frame to send the Komets into the second intermission with a 3-2 lead.

Fort Wayne scored three unanswered goals in the third period by Konstantin Shafranov, Justin Hodgman and Mitch Woods to send the Generals home with their 24th loss of the season.  Hodgman's tally was his first as a pro, playing in his second pro game with the Komets since being added to the roster Friday.

Aquino added an assist for a two-point night and extended his point-scoring streak to 12 games (9 goals, 10 assists).  Center Mathieu Curadeau moved his point streak to seven games assisting on Bertram's goal (6 goals, 4 assists).  Shafranov also dished a helper for a pair of points and rolled his point-scoring streak to five games (2 goals, 5 assists). 

Komet goaltender Kevin Reiter won his seventh straight game on 27 saves for an IHL high 28 wins on the season.  Flint's Bill Ruggiero suffered his fourth loss of the season in his fifth appearance making 33 saves on 39 shots.

The Komets improved to 48-12-5-2 for 103 points, nine points shy of the Fort Wayne franchise record of 112 points in a season, set four times previously.

The Komets are idle until next Friday night when they host the Kalamazoo Wings at 8pm.
