— The Komets announced Tuesday that five players have been added
to the preseason roster including former Komets Mitch Woods and
Matt Syroczynski.
Woods, 23, became a Fort Wayne fan favorite during his rooke
debut with the Komets in 2007-08. The Prince Albert,
Saskatchewan native scored 15 goals and 36 points in 73 games
while earning a team-high 297 penalty minutes for the season.
Woods helped the Komets capture the 2008 Turner Cup Championship
appearing in all 13 playoff games contributing a goal, six
points and 28 penalty minutes. 2009-10 will be the right
winger's third pro season after skating 12 games with Cincinnati
last year in the ECHL.
Syroczynski, 26, re-joins the Komets after skating the last two
seasons with Cincinnati scoring a total of 55 goals and 90
points in 102 ECHL games. The Hamburg, New York native
also appeared in three AHL games during his two-year stint with
Cincinnati.
Syroczynski made his pro debut with the Komets
in 2006-07 registering 20 goals and 41 points and taking Fort
Wayne's Most Improved Player award for the year. The left
winger claimed the league's Rookie of the Month award for
January, 2007 scoring five goals and 13 points in 13 games.
The Komets also announced that rookies Shawn Legris, Jeff
Wheeler and Travis Whitehead have agreed to terms and will
participate in the Komet camp.
Legris, 24, appeared in QJAHL stints with LaPlaine and
Terrebonne from 2002-2006 and has played the last two seasons in
a top level senior league in Quebec.
Wheeler, 25, completed four seasons at the University of
Wisconsin-Stout scoring six goals and 21 points last year in
NCHA play.
Whitehead, 25, finished four years of NCAA play last year
posting two goals and seven points in 25 games with Buffalo
State.
The Komets'
preseason roster
grows to 23 players including 14 forwards, seven defensemen and
two goaltenders.
The Komets will open their defense of the IHL Turner
Cup championship when the 58th season of Komet Hockey in Fort Wayne gets
underway in October.
