Komets Home For Three This Week
Jacks visit Wednesday, Gems here Friday, Mallards buzz in Sunday

Posted Monday, April 5, 2010

Fort Wayne, IN — The Komets completed week 25 gaining four points in three games played to improve to 44-21-1-3 for 92 points and continue to maintain second place in the IHL with two weeks remaining in 2009-10.  The Komets trail first-place Muskegon (48-18-1-3) by eight points with seven games remaining and hold a four-point cushion over third-place Port Huron (42-24-0-4).  The magic number that will keep the Komets from winning their fourth straight regular season crown is seven.  Any combination of points gained by Muskegon and points lost by Fort Wayne equaling seven will give the Lumberjacks the title (Port Huron has been eliminated from the race for the Huber Trophy).

The magic number for the Komets to clinch second place and home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs is nine.  Any combination of points won by Fort Wayne and lost by Port Huron equaling nine will guarantee the Komets at least a second-place finish.

The week ahead
The Komets finish their season series against Muskegon Wednesday night in Fort Wayne at 7:30pm.  The Komets trail the series 4-6-0-0 but are 3-2-0-0 against Muskegon after five meetings in Fort Wayne and have one game in hand.  The Lumberjacks are unbeaten in their last seven games (6-0-1-0) and are 8-1-1-0 in their last 10.

Friday the Komets host Dayton at 8pm.  It's the sixth and final visit by the last-place Gems.  The Komets lead the series 10-3-0-0. Dayton hosts Quad City Wednesday before traveling to Fort Wayne Friday.

Saturday the Komets complete the home-and-home series with the Gems at 7:30pm.  It is the final meeting of the season with the Komets holding a 7-1-0-0 series lead in games at Hara Arena.

Sunday the Komets return home to welcome Quad City at 5pm.  The Komets own a 10-1-0-1 series lead over the Mallards and are unbeaten in regulation (5-0-0-1) in the past six meetings on Colseum ice.  Quad City skates at Dayton Wednesday and hosts Bloomington Thursday and Saturday before making the trip to Fort Wayne Sunday.

About last week
The Komets won two out of three for the week starting with a 6-2 home win over Dayton Thursday.  Komet goalie Nick Boucher earned his first home win since Feb. 27 making 29 saves on 31 shots.  Matt Syroczynsk extended his point streak to six games while David Hukalo, Sean O'Connor, P.C. Drouin and Colin Chaulk each completed three-game point streaks.

Friday all point streaks came to an end as the Komets suffered a 3-1 loss at Flint.  The Generals improved to 5-1 over the Komets in six meetings at Perani Arena this season.  Overall the Komets are 5-4-0-2 after 11 meetings with Flint.  One meeting remains when the Generals visit for the Komets final home game of the season Sunday, April 18.

Saturday the Komets returned home to clip Port Huron 4-3.  Syroczynski had an assist to go with a goal and reached his career high of 21 assists in a season.  Boucher earned his 19th win of the season on 26 saves in his seventh straight start.  It was the last meeting of the season.  The Komets won the series against the Icehawks 6-5-0-0.

Dupuis hits 500.....Guy Dupuis registered his 500th regular season point as a Komet Saturday night.  Dupuis posted a three-point night scoring a goal and adding two assists in a 4-3 home win over Port Huron.  Besides 500 regular season points, Dupuis also owns Fort Wayne career defenseman records of 114 regular season goals and 124 all-time career goals (including playoffs).

Special K's.....The Komets only allowed one goal in 13 penalty kills for the week and lead the IHL with a penalty kill success rate of 86.6%.  The Komets scored on four of six power plays in two home games last week to lead the league with a 25.2% success rate when skating with the man advantage on home ice.

Komets to make 50th playoff appearance.....the Komets will be in the playoffs for the 50th time in their 58-year history.  When the Fort Wayne defends it's back-to-back Turner Cup championship titles later this month it will be the 43rd Komet appearance as a member of the IHL.  The Komets also qualified for seven UHL playoff runs.
