Komets net three
points for week 19
Generals visit Saturday
Posted Monday, February 22, 2010
Fort Wayne, IN
— The Komets earned three out of six points for week 19 of
2009-10 and begin week 20 with a 30-16-1-2 record for 63 points
and third place, 12 points behind first-place Muskegon with
eight weeks and 27 games remaining in the race for the Huber
Trophy.
The Komets started the week suffering their first overtime loss
of the season 4-3 to the visiting Bloomington PrairieThunder.
The Komets fell to 6-3 in games needing extra time. Friday
the Komets lost only their fifth home game in regulation to Port
Huron 4-1. It's the first time this season the Komets are
winless in two straight home games. Saturday the Komets
completed the week with their third straight win at Dayton 3-2.
Komet streaks.....Four Komet point-streaks ended
in Friday's 4-1 home loss to Port Huron. However, Saturday
at Dayton Leo Thomas (C) dished an assist to extend his point
streak to three games (1 goal, 2 assists), goaltender Tim Haun
earned his third straight win and the victory gave the Komets a
three-game road winning streak.
Home cookin'....in addition to being on pace to
lead the league in attendance for the eighth consecutive season,
after 23 home games the Komets are an improved 15-5-1-1 (.739)
on home ice compared to last year's 11-8-1-3 (.565). Fort
Wayne's special teams led the IHL at home on the power play
(25.7%) and have the best home penalty kill at 88.9%. The
Komets have the stingiest defense at home allowing only 52 goals
on Coliseum ice.
Shooting the puck.....Sean O'Connor (RW) has
emerged as a contender for the Komets' shots title, currently
tied with usual leading shooter Guy Dupuis at 151 shots.
Close behind is P.C. Drouin (LW) with 142 shots. However,
Matt Syroczynski (LW) leads with a 4.7 shots per game average.
The Komets lead the IHL with a 34.7 shots per game average.
Leading the "I".....Tim Haun leads goalies with a
2.21 goals-against average and 1,822 minutes; Guy Dupuis leads
defensemen with 151 shots while rookie Frankie DeAngelis tops
blueliners with three game-winning goals, two short-handed goals
and a +18.
The week ahead
This week the Komets will skate a pair on the road before
returning to Coliseum ice Saturday. Wednesday the Komets
skate at Quad City at 8:05pm (Fort Wayne time). The
Mallards are battling for a playoff spot, trailing fourth place
Bloomington by five points. Quad City improved last week gaining
four of six points after losing three straight the week before
and are 1-3-0-2 in their last six outings. The Komets
whitewashed the Mallards in their last meeting 5-0 Feb. 13 in
Fort Wayne to take an 8-1-0-1 series lead.
Friday the Komets return to Hara Arena in Dayton to face the
Gems at 7:30pm. Last Saturday's 3-2 win at Dayton gave the
Komets a 5-3-0-0 series lead over the Gems, 4-1-0-0 at Dayton.
Friday's game will be the Komets' sixth of nine visits this
season. The Gems are paired with Flint in the IHL's cellar
with 44 points and are 1-5-0-0 in their last six games.
Dayton travels to Bloomington Wednesday before hosting the
Komets Friday.
Saturday the Komets return home to host the Flint Generals for
the fourth of six occasions this year. The Generals are
winless on Fort Wayne ice after three visits and the Komets lead
the series 4-1-0-1. While tied with Dayton at the bottom
of the IHL, the Generals, coming off an 8-7 home loss to
Muskegon Sunday, are 7-4-0-0 in their last 11 games and have not
been winless in two straight games since Jan. 22. The
Komets and Generals have gone the longest since meetings with
the last meeting Jan. 15 when the Komets posted a 3-0 home
shutout over the Generals. Flint skates at Muskegon
Wednesday and will welcome Bloomington Friday before visiting
Fort Wayne Saturday.
