Fort Wayne, IN — The Komets moved into a three-way
first-place tie in the IHL with Muskegon and Port Huron after
the fifth week of play winning one of three games. After
11 games the Komets stand at 7-4-0-0 for 14 points.
The Komets started week five with a 3-1 victory at Flint before
suffering their first home loss of the season to Muskegon Friday
5-4, ending a three-game home win string. Saturday the
Komets were turned back at Kalamazoo 6-2 giving the Wings their
first win in three meeting this season over Fort Wayne.
Leading the IHL: The Komets enter the sixth
week of 2008-09 leading the league with 54 goals scored for an
IHL best 4.91 per game average. The Komets also have the
IHL's top power play unit with a 23.1% power play efficiency
rating. Left wing P.C. Drouin and enter Mathieu Curadeau
each lead with 11 goals while center Colin Chaulk leads with 16
assists including a league-best seven power play assists.
Defenseman Kevin Bertram has a league-high plus/minus of +11.
Center Rick Varone leads IHL rookies with six goals, eight
assists and 14 points. Guy Dupuis tops defensemen with 13
assists and 17 points along with 39 shots.
O'Connor in the fold.....the Komets welcomed
rookie forward Sean O'Connor to the lineup last week.
O'Connor completed his first three games with the Komets
collecting his first pro goal Friday against Muskegon and dished
an assist Saturday in Kalamazoo for a two-game point streak.
Defenseman Kevin Bertram also has points in his last two games
(1 goal, 2 assists) while center Colin Chaulk had his
league-high eight-game point streak (3 goals, 16 assists)
snapped Saturday at Kalamazoo.
Leaders of the week: Week five leaders were
left wing P.C. Drouin with four goals, including two power play
tallies, and five points. Defenseman Guy Dupuis passed a
team-high five assists for the week.
Aiming for 500: Komet head coach Al Sims
registered his 499th coaching career win Thursday with a 3-1
victory at Flint. Sims will have a chance to reach 500
when the Komets host Port Huron Friday night at 8:00.
Leading at the gate: The Komets drew a crowd
of 8,332 fans for Friday night's home game against Muskegon.
Fort Wayne leads all pro minor leagues with a per game average
attendance of 8,919 after four home games.
Komets home for two this weekend
Streaking Hawks here Friday.....for the first time
this season the Komets will host a home doubleheader weekend.
Friday the hot Port Huron Icehawks visit for an 8pm faceoff.
The co-leading Hawks completed last week on a roll of 5 straight
wins. Port Huron hasn't lost a match since Nov. 1 at Flint
3-1. Port Huron starts the week after a 4-3 shootout win
at Flint last Saturday night, the first shootout in the IHL this
season. Friday's tilt will be the second meeting of 15
this season. The Komets spoiled Port Huron's home and
season opener Oct. 17 6-2 in the only previous meeting.
The Icehawks will host Kalamazoo Tuesday night before making
their first trip of the season to Fort Wayne Friday.
Wings visit Saturday....the Komets will entertain
the Kalamazoo Wings Saturday at 7:30pm. The Komets will
have a chance to avenge a 6-2 setback at Kalamazoo last
Saturday. It will be the second of eight Kalamazoo visits
and the fourth of 16 meetings this season. The Wings won
both games played last week and will put their two-game win
streak at risk with a visit to Port Huron Tuesday.
Kalamazoo will host Bloomington Friday before traveling to Fort
Wayne Saturday.

in conjunction with the O'Daniel Automotive Group will be
collecting your no-longer-used cell phones at the game this
Saturday night. All cell phones donated will benefit the
Disabled Amercian Veterans of Allen County.
