Fort Wayne, IN --- The Komets
announced Monday that mascot Icy D. Eagle (EYE-cee EE-guhl) has agreed to terms
and will resume his position of "Face of the Franchise" for the 2007-08 IHL
season.
Eagle,
16, hails from Salt Lake City, Utah and was the Komets’ first pick in the 1994
Minor League Mascot Dispersal Draft, and that draft’s first pick overall.
Icy began his career in Utah with
the Salt Lake City Golden Eagles for the 1993-94 season, making his first
appearance in Fort Wayne at the 1994 IHL All-Star game. The eagle mascot
migrated to Fort Wayne in the fall of 1994 and has made the Summit City his
permanent nesting grounds.
Icy is widely recognized as minor
league sports and entertainment’s premier mascot and was a widely sought-after
free agent after concluding his 13th season with the Komets in 2006-07.
According to Icy (quoted through
an Eagle interpreter), "It was never a question of whether or not
I was going to stay in Fort Wayne. After all, Fort Wayne is the #1 minor league
sports market in
the United States according to Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal... and
everyone knows
that the Komets are Fort Wayne’s Top Team. Combine that with my long-term
endorsement
agreement with the Fort Wayne Area Jeep & Chrysler Dealers, and I would have to
have been a
real ‘bird brain’ to have looked to go anywhere else. I plan on finishing my
career with the Komets
until my retirement when I finally migrate south for the winters."
A closed session press conference
was held on Friday and clips of that press conference will be
airing on Comcast Cablevision as well as at various times on network television.
Please watch for
these clips for more comments and reactions from Icy D. Eagle.
Per the Komets team policy
relating to all contracts involving six-and-one-half-foot tall giant eagles,
terms of the deal are not disclosed.
