--- The International Hockey
League announced Wednesday that Fort Wayne Komets head coach Al Sims was named
the 2007-08 IHL Coach of the Year, as selected by league head coaches and
general managers.
Sims has guided his Komets to an IHL regular season championship in
record-breaking fashion. The Komets are on top of the league with a record of
53-12-5-2 and 113 points after 72 games, tying the Fort Wayne franchise mark of
53 wins in a season and breaking the old record of 112 points in a season, set
four times previously but never before eclipsed by a Fort Wayne team in it's
56-year history.
Sims has also led the Komets to an IHL record 24 consecutive home wins and
the Komets are one win shy of matching the Fort Wayne record of 32 home wins in
a season with two home games remaining.
Sims returned to Fort Wayne this year for the first time since capturing the
IHL Turner Cup Championship as the Komets' head coach in 1992-93. He also won
the IHL's Commissioner's Trophy that season for coach of the year.
2007-08 is Sims' 33rd pro hockey career year since his rookie season of
1973-74 as a defenseman for the NHL's Boston Bruins, playing alongside the
legendary Bobby Orr. The Toronto, Ontario native also skated stints with
Hartford and Los Angeles for a total of 476 NHL games. Sims completed his
playing career with the Komets during 1988-89 as a player-assistant coach before
accepting the first head coaching role of his career with Fort Wayne in 1989-90.
Sims, 54, is in his fifth season overall behind the Komet bench, registered
his 200th career regular season win as Fort Wayne's head coach January 2, 2008,
coached his 1,000th career game March 21, 2008 at Port Huron and coached his
400th Komet career game April 5th at Muskegon.
Sims will be presented the award prior to the Komet's final home game of the
regular season Sunday, April 13 at 5pm.
