Fort Wayne, IN --- The Komets clinched the regular season championship
for the second straight season and will have home ice advantage throughout the
IHL playoffs after taking both games played last week. Fort Wayne is the first
minor league pro team to capture a regular season championship in North America
this season.
-IHL Standings-
Friday night the Komets clipped the visiting Kalamazoo Wings 3-2 in a shootout
to push their home winning streak to 19 games, eclipsing a 44-year-old Fort
Wayne record of 18 consecutive home wins.
Saturday the Komets clinched the IHL Huber Trophy with a 4-3 shootout win
over the Flint Generals on Fort Wayne ice and extended their home winning streak
to 20 games. The Komets also are riding a league season-high 10-game winning
streak.
The IHL's record for consecutive home wins is 22 games set by the Muskegon
Mohawks during the 1965-66 campaign.
The Komets hold a 27-point lead over second place Port Huron with 96 points
and a record of 45-12-5-1. 13 games remain on the season and Fort Wayne has a
chance to smash it's all-time records of 53 wins and 112 points in a season. The
Komets set the mark of 53 wins during 2003-04. Fort Wayne has hit 112 points
four times in the past including 1983-84, 1985-86, 1991-92 and 2003-04, but has
never had more than 112 points in a season in it's 56-year history.
Generals return to Fort Wayne for battle Wednesday and Saturday
The Komets will skate four games this week starting Monday with the annual St.
Patrick's Day green ice game at Kalamazoo at 7pm. The Komets have won the last
seven straight meetings and lead the series 11-1-1. Monday night's game is the
seventh and final game of the regular season at Kalamazoo where the Komets hold
a 5-0-1 edge.
Wednesday the Komets and Flint Generals faceoff at the Memorial Coliseum in
Fort Wayne at 7:30pm. The Komets have won the last three meetings and are
unbeaten by the Generals in the last five (4-0-1). The Komets are unbeaten by
Flint on Fort Wayne ice in 5 meetings (5-0-0).
Friday the Komets travel to Port Huron for a 7:30pm faceoff at McMorran
Arena. It's the 14th of 15 meetings this season with the Komets leading the
series 10-2-1. The Icehawks are ahead of Flint, Muskegon and Kalamazoo in a
tight race for second place and home-ice advantage in the first round of the IHL
playoffs. Only six points separates Port Huron from fifth place Kalamazoo (63
points). The Icehawks are on a roll of three straight wins and will host
Kalamazoo Wednesday before welcoming the Komets Friday night.
Saturday the Komets and Generals tangle for the third straight game at the
War Memorial Coliseum at 7:30pm. It will be the 12th of 15 meetings and the
seventh of eight in Fort Wayne. Flint will be the Komet's guest in the season
finale in Fort Wayne April 13.
All Komet games this week are slated to air on Fort Wayne radio with Bob Chase
calling the action radio-rinkside. Monday's St. Patrick's Day game at Kalamazoo
and Wednesday's Komet home game against Flint will be aired in the Fort Wayne

attempts until last week's games. Shafranov scored both of the shootout game
winners Friday and Saturday night to improve to 2-4 in shootout attempts this
season.
