Fort Wayne, IN – The Komets clipped the visiting Evansville IceMen Sunday 2-1 in overtime at the Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne to gain a split of a weekend exhibition home doubleheader weekend prior to the last week of preparation for Fort Wayne’s inaugural ECHL season.
The Komets broke a scoreless tie at 14:26 of the third period when forward Matt Firman finally solved Evansville goaltender Paul Karpowich. Evansville answered at 16:57 as defenseman Daniel Tetrault beat Fort Wayne native goaltender Larkin Saalfrank to knot the game at 1-1 and send it into overtime.
Defenseman Daniel Maggio scored the game winner for the Komets on the power play at 2:12 of the extra frame to give Fort Wayne the preseason finale win.
Saalfrank earned the win in the Fort Wayne net stopping eight of nine shots after Francois Lacerte started the game stopping all 11 shots faced in his second preseason appearance. Karpowich made 35 saves for the IceMen on 37 shots.
The Komets will prepare this week for their home opener and inaugural ECHL campaign Friday when they rekindle their old rivalry with the Kalamazoo Wings at the Coliseum at 8pm.
The home opening festivities, including a ring presentation to the 2012 Fort Wayne President Cup Champions and the annual Komet Legends introductions, get underway at 7:45pm Friday. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for the ceremonies. Plenty of good seats remain for opening night.
